How do I get other websites to link to me?

Have you asked this question? Most website owners and designers have.

The basic, best answer to getting those links is to create good content. Create information that others will want their readers to have access to.

You'll get some links just because another site thinks yours is worth linking to but you do need to put in some effort. Most things in life are valuable when you work for them.

Be a friend to the Internet. Create interesting information. Compile lists. Do the research.

Once you have good content you'll need to look for websites that will actually want to link to you

The best article, bar none, on the subject of linking is

"Link Building Notes of an SEO Kindergartner"

It's long, 19 pages, but chock full of really good info. I truly don't think I can add anything. Read it and go for it. Good luck...As they say..."Be the Best and The Links Will Come"

Good SEO Forums, Good SEO Blogs

If you're interested in SEO you should be visiting forums and commenting when appropriate

Ask Questions and Learn a little each day

Try to read at least one SEO Blog a day

Some of my favorite seo forums and blogs are

High Rankings

Matt Cutts

WebProWorld

Search Engine Journal

There are thousands of forums and blogs on search. This list is just a starting point.
For beginners, try the article on Search Engine Journal...55 steps for Search Engine Optimization.

My motto with SEO is that it's a "cinch by the inch" Don't feel as though SEO is a job you can do once and it's done. Search changes daily as new websites, blogs and forums are being added to the internet every minute. Keep your eyes and your mind open. Change one small thing a day and your site will improve it's search status.

How to Submit My Site to Search Engines

When you're ready to submit your site to the search engines save yourself some cash and do it yourself. It's fast and easy. You'll learn something and you can be proud of seizing control of your own destiny.
Here's how you submit your site to Google
Google
Here's how to submit your website to Yahoo
Yahoo
To submit to MSN
MSN

I started on the internet in the mid '90's with a small one page niche website selling Confetti. Back then there were just a few of us. Today there are millions. In the beginning Yahoo was the only search engine. Today there are hundreds. These three are the biggest with more than 90% of all search traffic.
Start there and then as you get time you can post to some of the others. Good luck!

Long Tail Keywords

It's really hard to compete with the big guys on the web
One way to do it is to target multiple word keywords, also called long tail keywords
Think of it this way. Suppose you are looking to buy a car.
You search for cars on the internet. Would you type in the word car or would you type in something more specific? Maybe cars Chicago. Try typing in everything you're looking for.
Here's my test, done in Google
cars 704,000,000 results
cars chicago 342,000 results
used cars Chicago 237,000 results
used cars Honda Chicago 93,000
used cars Honda Accord Chicago 47,000
used cars Honda Accord Chicago 2 door 26,500
The buyer who's looking for a 2 door Honda Accord in Chicago doesn't care about cars in the rest of the world, doesn't care about Ford or Chevy, doesn't care about new cars and doesn't care about 4 doors. The buyer you want is the one who's actually looking for what you are selling.
Be specific. Be accurate. Long tail keywords get the most targeted customers

SEO Step One

Search Engine Optimization

Step 1...
You need a website. Decide what your website is going to do
Jot down a brief description of what it will be. Don't be too wordy. Think of what you would say to your friends if they asked, "What's your website about" Once you have that answer you can start looking for domain names. .com's will be the best and try to avoid dashes, underlines etc. It needs to be easy for your visitors to remember
2...
Go to a domain Registrar. There are several. I prefer Network Solutions or Go Daddy.
Both have tools on their home pages that allow you to enter the names you want and see if they're available. If your first choice is available grab it. The site will ask you to give them some basic contact information and of course a method of payment. If you are starting a business on the web I highly recommend automatic renewal or renew for several years at the outset. Imagine how awful it would be if you built your web business and forgot to renew and someone else bought it up from under you. This can and does happen.

3.
Once you have your domain name you need a website. Tomorrow I'll give you some tips on the steps to getting started.

...On a personal note: I've gotten to know a really cool childrens author, Bonnie Worthington. She is following my SEO Steps and is already in position ONE in Google. Check out her book, Engine Ed. It's a wonderful story for children who've outgrown Thomas the Train and still love trains.
